How to Resolve Roommate Issues in an Apartment

by Michelle Johnson

There are times that an argument will erupt from you and your roommate, especially when you're living in an apartment. It doesn't matter if that roommate is a complete stranger or a friend you known for years. When these issues occur it will cause frustration and arguments between you two, and a good way to counter this is communication.

Here are a few ways to get rid of the tension between roommates in your apartment:

Make an Agreement
Make a written or verbal agreement with your roommates. If you can do
this before moving in, great. If not, take a few minutes to sit down
and discuss how you will deal with issues if they come up. Ask
questions like:

1. How will you split responsibilities?
2. How often do you plan to clean the apartment?
3. Will you have guests over during the week? If so, it may be helpful
to set a curfew on how long they'll stay.
4. How will you split apartment expenses and monthly bills?

After the Issue Occurs
If an argument has already occurred and you haven't had a
discussion about the above things, make sure to approach it calmly. If
you're in the middle of a disagreement, take time to calm down
by taking a walk, going for a drive, or something similar. After
you've had the chance to calm down, reconsider the issue. Does
it seem trivial now that you're looking back on it? Determine
if you could have handled the situation better. Next:

Explain your side - Clarify your side without placing faults. Sometime it helps if you use statements like "I fell...", because it makes your roommate feel less cynical. You should also listen to your roommate's side of the story as well.

Explain your side - Explain your side of the argument without
placing blame. Sometimes, statements that begin with "I
feel..." are a good way to start because it will make your
roommate feel less defensive. On this note, listen to your
roommate's side of the story as well.

The above tips can come in very useful when you're having concerns with your roommate. Be sure to keep them in mind next time-they'll save you much stress and time in the long run.
