Hypnosis - The Truth Behind All The Myths

by Sarah Cox

Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don't consider them to be genuine scientific pursuits. Provided below are some common beliefs associated with hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very easy to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. Even people who have witnessed hypnosis on others often refuse to believe in it. They hold that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But that is not true at all. Even mentally strong people can fall under the charms of an expert hypnosis practitioner.

That hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness is another myth that has been circulating for quite some time now. An individual under hypnosis does not get shut off from the external world, but remains completely conscious of the happenings around him. Hypnosis actually induces a state of absolute calm characterized by a growth in levels of attentiveness, and this intensified awareness helps the subject to absorb suggestions without difficulty.

Some scientists have found that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another common myth. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis method without considering individual differences in nature and disposition. One hypnosis technique for all is not a viable answer as different people fall under different personality types, and therefore respond to different methods.

People also tend to equate hypnosis with meditation. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is indispensable in hypnosis, while meditation is like an appointment with the self without any communication involved. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind sans any communication, whereas communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis method.

A majority of people believe that it is impossible to bring about alterations in one's appearance and conduct through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is unnatural to the body. But by mentally conditioning an individual to abandon addictive habits like eating too much and chain smoking, and by heightening one's inspiration levels, hypnosis can bring about significant physical alterations in an individual and pave the way for a healthier body.

If an individual believes in all the misconceptions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn't venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a better and healthier life.
