The Tradition Of Wedding Favors

by Danny Ricks

Wedding is an event that highlights the lives of people in a relationship. In as much as couples plan for their wedding day in terms of reception, wedding gown, and the entourage, part of the preparation includes wedding favors. These are small gifts given by the newlywed couple to guests. The giving of gifts is a simple gesture of showing appreciation to their guests for attending and sharing with them the most special occasion of their lives.

The giving of wedding favors dates back some centuries ago. It started in the 16th century where the rich Europeans distribute gifts to wedding guests in the form of small trinket they called bonbonniere. This trinket is a small box made of porcelain, crystal or precious stones that contains sugar or confection. It symbolizes wealth and royalty. Some customs are in the form of five candies which symbolizes the five common wishes of couples such as fertility, happiness, health, longevity and wealth.

As time passed, the traditional gift giving of sugar and candies were substituted with sugarcoated almonds given in set of three or five. A set of 3 means the husband, wife and future child while a set of 5 stands for fertility, happiness, health, longevity and wealth.

Other wedding favors depend on the cultures and traditions of each country. Like in Malaysia, couples give a hand painted egg that symbolizes fertility. In Japan, paper cranes made by the bride and used as decorations during the wedding are also given away. The paper cranes symbolize fidelity, good fortune and longevity.

Over the years, gifts being used for weddings have evolved. The sugar, candies and almonds are now being replaced with more personalized and more practical souvenirs like picture frames, scented soap and candle, compact discs containing the favorite songs of the couple, glass coasters, wine glasses to name a few. Some couples also prefer that their names are printed or engraved on the souvenirs. For some, herbs and fortune plants are also used as giveaways.

A wedding event organizer in case a marrying couple gets one, could also help them decide on what to give their guests. Some are already available or it could design one according to their preference. On the other hand, if the couple is planning their wedding on their own, they could make use of the many resources available in the internet. It could give them the best ideas on their wedding favors.

Normally, the type of souvenirs given reflects the personalities of the couple and also based on the theme of their wedding. If budget is not a problem, the couple could choose expensive items. On the other hand, they could settle for the most affordable type of gift and there are so many in the market today.

The guests will remember that they became part of the most special day in the lives of a couple through the wedding favors they received. Expensive or not so expensive, it becomes a symbol of the appreciation of the newlyweds to the guests who were with them as they celebrate the most momentous event in their lives.

Wedding favors have gone customary these days. This is because the groom and the bride say farewell to singleness by thanking the guests who graced such occasions as bridal showers. And these come in many different varieties these days. Also try choosing some candy favors from www.momentsofelegance.com.
