Many of us have a long list of local attractions we'd like to visit, perhaps written when we first moved there. But years later, a lot of people have seen less of their own city then the weekend tourists have.
What are your plans for the kids' summer break? Visiting the local attractions can be a fun excursion, and if you know it is likely to be crowded with tourists on weekends, you can use the summer break to go.
Being a local at a tourist attraction has its' advantages. You likely know the best way to get there and may know other tricks to get in and out. If a particular line is exceptionally crowed, you always have the option of going back another day!
Unlike traveling tourists, you can save money on food and beverages. For example, water parks tend to get crowded at lunch time and the food can be expensive. Why not go in the morning, then save money by taking the kids home for lunch?
You may also consider having your hand stamped at all-day excursions, such as the zoo, so that you can leave for lunch and come back. You may even want to pack a picnic lunch and bring it along! Just be sure not to let food sit out in the sun!
Most attractions offer a pass that will allow you unlimited visits during a certain season, most often summer. If you have favorite attractions, or ones that can be tiring to do all in one day, consider a seasonal pass. This will pay for itself in about three visits, not even counting all the money you'll save on food by being able to feed the kids lunch at home!
Not sure what's even in your area? Don't feel bad - just go to your local visitor center and grab some brochures. You may be surprised at what is very close to you.
Best of all, the local visitor centers usually have discounts available so hurry on and visit your local attractions. It's fun and it won't break your budget!
