Engagement Rings : A Short Guide

by Mark Walters

Although most men who are ready to buy an engagement ring want to make it a surprise and keep the details of payment and pricing to themselves, the best approach is to have your significant other pick out their own engagement ring; this way you do not have to worry about whether or not she will like the ring. If you decide that you would like to choose an engagement ring without consulting your partner then you will need to put some serious thought and effort into getting the right one.

To get a better idea of what your partner likes, consider the jewelry they currently own, and what type of jewelry they wear the most, and use that as a basis when selecting a ring. At the very least, figure out what general style of jewelry she likes. Is it classic to modern items? Think about any shopping trips the two of you have been on and if she has ever showed interest in a certain type of ring or type of jewelry.

To get a better idea of what she likes, go out shopping one day and whilst you are out visit a jewelry store and pay attention to what catches her eye. If she asks, just say you are looking for something for yourself, giving her the time to take in the selection and start making choices and suggestions for herself. Make sure you ask her if she liked anything before you leave so you can make a mental note of it for later.

If in real doubt about what type of engagement ring to buy then opting for a diamond one is advisable as pretty much all women love diamond rings. Although you may think that buying a diamond engagement ring will be too expensive, there are some options available that make it affordable. As diamonds are priced according to their grade, which is based on clarity, cut, color and carat, you can choose one that is not perfect, but still looks nice, in order to find one that is within your price range.

You also need to figure out the size of the ring you want to get her, so that it will fit well on her finger. Try to check out one of her rings, ideally the one that is on the finger she will be wearing your engagement ring on, and see what size it is. An alternative approach is to get hold of one of her gloves or to draw around the outline of her fingers under the premise of having a bit of fun.

In the event that you get an engagement ring, but something is not right about it, there is nothing to it, since you can just change it or get it resized, and there will be no harm done. Make sure you let her know after you give her the ring that you do not mind if she does not like it and wants to exchange it for another one that she likes more.
