There are some things you should consider before picking out homeschool courses for your child. Taking the time out to answer a few questions beforehand will make the selection process much simpler.
The first thing you need to do is decide on how the courts content will be delivered. Will you use a textbook-based course or an online-based course? There are other styles of teaching as well, such as correspondence learning.
Second, would you prefer a secular system of teaching or one based on a religion? Do you care about whether or not in the studies are Montessori or Waldorf or unit based?
It is very important to find out what courses your state government requires you to teach. Once you know all of this, you will be better equipped to select the courses your child will be taking.
Be aware that many states require homeschooled children to submit annual progress reports or assessments, to track their educational development. Make sure you teach your kids subjects that the state will recognize when they review your family.
Make sure your kids are prepared for any standardized tests they may have to take. Including some prep courses in your curriculum can definitely help your kids when they are taking these tests.
Now for one of the most important factors to take into consideration: college. There are many different course and unit requirements that students have to consider and meet when seeking admission to any institution, depending on what colleges you and your child are considering. If you already have a specific institution in mind, it will not hurt to gear your child's education towards meeting that college's requirements.
Homeschooling can be a very interesting and fun method of learning for you and your children. As long as it is done correctly, it will prepare them for college and even advance their knowledge beyond their peers.
