The materials and quality of fashion jewellery vary widely. The metal in the pieces are often an alloy of metals that have been electroplated with gold, sliver or another inert metal. Stones may be resin, glass, cubic zirconia, or even semi-precious stones. More expensive jewellery often has thicker plating that will last longer.

Interestingly enough, fashion jewellery became popular at a time when the nation was suffering from the great depression. In the 1930s, this jewellery was designed to be worn with a specific outfit and then discarded when the outfit was discarded. There were some people that decided to keep the jewellery and that has brought about a the collectors market.

During the 1940S and 1950s, female movie stars often wore fashion jewellery and copies were sold at the local five and dime stores such as Woolworth. You could find copies of fashion jewellery worn by Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Russell or Vivien Leigh. These copies made it affordable for the ordinary woman to both own and wear fashion jewellery.

It was Coco Chanel who first mixed faux pearls with gold to bring fashion jewellery to life.

Kenneth Jay Lane was responsible for designing unique pieces of fashion jewellery for the stars and politician's wives including Jackie Onassis and Barbara Bush. Mrs. Bush wore a three tiered pearl necklace designed by Lane to her husband's inaugural ball.

In the past few years, layering of clothing has become popular in fashion. Why not adapt this idea to your fashion jewellery. Layer bracelets and necklaces three or four at a time. Just be sure that you are combining complimentary colors. You will want to choose a theme for all of your pieces. Textures or colors should match or go for the eclectic look, as long as there is no clash between colors and textures. After all, you may be the beginning of the newest style.

At a time when money may once again very tight, why not learn from the women of the depression and find some beautiful fashion jewellery to complement your outfit. Costume jewellery is available in many different price ranges, but does not need to be expensive in order to add to any wardrobe.
