Spanish And English Cultures At Home And Abroad Reviewed

Spanish and English cultures are two of the most prevalent in the world. The two exist side by side and often operate in unison. Looking at a few similarities and differences can be a great way to understand our neighbors.

Spanish is a Romance language spoken in large areas of Europe, most of Southern and Central America, and much of North America. English has Germanic origins and has become the predominant language in global business and media. The proximity between the two cultures has the two languages, such as in in the USA, often makes the populations a dual language society. Examples of this are in Spanish loan words such as cigar, comrade, tornado or patio.

The social structure of Spanish cultures is closely tied to the family unit. This social structure includes nuclear and extended family. American and English cultures tend to be more progressive in their relationships from business to family. In America and the UK, the family unit has taken on new and more independent form with climbing divorce rates over the last 30 years

The food of Spanish cultures is often healthier than the traditional western diet. Spanish food tends to be based on the fresh and unprocessed ingredients. In Britain and America, foods tend to be heavier, with more carbohydrates and fats.

Television is a central part of life in the UK and USA. The population of Spain spends more time outdoors, playing, socializing or working. In the UK much of this has to do with the inclement weather. The UK is a smaller country with closer proximity to rich cultural heritage. From theatre to castles, the cultural heritage of England is far more accessible than that of Spain. The western English culture tends to be the most ubiquitous in global media.

The differences between Spanish and English cultures are open to see. Learning about the similarities can be a great way to build an social bridges to other parts of the world.
